Staying in the dark

I am sure many of us who have opened up to the journey of uncovering our essential natures have thought at times that it might just have been easier to just stay in the dark. It is a courageous and vulnerable journey that requires us to face ourselves openly and honestly again and again.

Experience the polarities

Of course as we see ourselves, we notice both what we like about ourselves and also what we judge. The secret is to learn to embrace it all, to bring loving compassion to the parts of ourselves and others that we usually reject. There is a beautiful saying: “no mud, no lotus”. It is important to open up to the polarities of our existence and experience to fully know ourselves. In the experiencing of the polarities we uncover the centered self.

Fear creates separation

Fear and all its various manifestations, jealousy, judgement, shame etc, create separation. In order to open up our hearts we want to listen deeply and practice kindness instead of going to war by shaming and blaming ourselves and shutting down. Creating a loving space around the fear and shame and whatever else shows up for you allows us not to drown in self pity or push through by disconnecting, but to fully allow and embrace the fullness and beauty of our true being.

Sit quietly and take a few deep breaths. Bring to mind something that is creating distress in your world right now. Notice what arises on the emotional level. Become aware of the sensations in your body and breathe into those places not to get rid of them but merely to bring attention there. Become mindful of the habits and practices that accompany this situation. What do you use to block it or move away from it? Now open up beautiful heart centered space around all of it. Let it be. Allow yourself to let go into this space and quietly notice what happens within you. No attachment to outcome, just observing.
